Ghana formerly known as the Gold Coast is famously known as the first African country to gain their independence from the British colony. Though a multi-ethnic country, the unification of culture has helped the country enjoy a stable and peaceful political climate in comparison to other African countries.

In Ghana, names like Monday, Tuesday or even Saturday are very common as parents name their children based on the day they were born. Also names are given on circumstances surrounding the birth of the child, twin status or the name of an ancestor in the family.

Ghanaians are indirect communicators thus they tend to use lots of proverbs, wise sayings and analogies in order to convene their message in a ‘polite’ manner. Silence is also an acceptable form of communication. If a Ghanaian is uncomfortable with a question or thinks that his or her response will make the ‘asker’ uncomfortable, they choose silence.

The Ashanti tribe of Ghana is one of the nine African societies in the world where lineage is traced through the maternal ancestors. A child is believed to inherit the father’s soul and from the mother, a child receives its flesh and blood.
